stuck down
Meah Enya Brooks

the issue with being simultaneously shy
and paranoid is that I’m so sure
that every single time I meet someone new
they think I’m stuck-up

I’m not stuck-up
I’m just scared anything I say
will sound stuck-up
so I scarcely speak; I pretty much stay silent
which in itself serves to
make me seem stuck-up

stuck-up and standoffish and snobby
scintillating with superiority
scarcely suppressing my sanctimoniousness

it’s a self-fulfilling prophecy, sadly
but no, sorry
if anything I’m stuck-down
stuck down in the drudges of reticence
and dim-wittedness
and defeatism

simply shy.
